Goal-fest in the Mud!
by Ace reporter Brian Carrington
The U13 Blues got 2014 underway with a feast of goals after a two week break for the festive period, away to Southwell. After a night of heavy rain and with drizzle continuing to fall the pitch was very slippery and it took both teams a while to settle into any rhythm of play, but it soon became clear that Bingham were going to be quickest into their stride. A few early attacks were repelled by the home defence but it didn't take long for Tom to latch on to a poor clearance and get a clean strike over the keeper's head to put Bingham into a deserved lead. At this stage the home team were still in it but solid defending from Henry and Toby backed up by a couple of brave saves by Ben kept Bingham's noses in front. As the half wore on though the goals started to flow. Wave after wave of Bingham attacking resulted in Josh G and Nathan matching each other for clinical finishes, adding two goals each before the break. Also Paul was particularly unlucky when his header from a corner was headed off the line, however the teams turned round with Bingham 5-0 to the good.
Manager Billy was able to bring on three subs in the second half with Nick, Ash & Zak coming on to try and add to the goals. And the first 15 minutes of the second half saw more slick attacking from the away side prompted by intelligent through balls from Joe & Oliver, resulting in the supply of goals continuing. The two Joshes and Zak were the targets up front and between them they got three quick-fire goals in next to no time, with Josh G adding two more to his first half tally and Zak clinically finishing when clean through. But the scoring wasn't over as Bingham could sense the chance to get to the magical double figures and two pieces of individual skill gave Joe and Oliver the goals their overall performance in the middle of the pitch deserved. The final ten minutes saw Southwell, despite being well beaten, countering by putting the Bingham goal under pressure but they were repelled by good defending and goalkeeping meaning a clean sheet to put the icing on a memorable performance.
Well done Bingham on a 10-0 victory away from home and what a great way to start the new year!
