Impressive away win
When everything goes right!
West Bridgford are a team we've not managed to get the better of since they had two teams at U11 and we squeaked a win over the weaker of the two. Since they've just had the one side they've generally beaten us comfortably, though we had a narrow 2-1 loss late last season in a great end to end match.
In a change to the expected programming, Bingham flew out of the traps and were straight into the West Bridgford girls from the first whistle. This was a welcome change from our normal "start slow and give them a goal before we wake up" approach, and hopefully one that will continue every week. Our girls dominated the midfield thanks to great work by Katy, Izzy, Diesel and Lauren (who also kept WB's main threat very quiet for the entire match) with support off the bench from Emily and Mia, and spent much of the first half camped in WB territory, with just the occasional long ball out for our defence to deal with. Anna G, Eve and Nic in attack all ran their socks off to close down the defence and made it very hard for them to play out. The home side have some pacy attackers but they were kept very quiet by Anna B, with excellent back up from Evie, Bella and Lily, and later Elisabeth and Rioja. Chances came and went as the girls followed their instructions to shoot at every opportunity. Eventually the breakthrough came thanks to Izzy's powerful shot deceiving the WB goalkeeper. The game ought to have been put to bed before half time but thanks to some good last ditch defending and decent goalkeeping our girls did not come off at the break with the lead they deserved. H/T West Bridgford 0 - 1 BTFC.
The coaches asked for more of the same in the second half, and also that we be careful not to fall to a sucker punch after not scoring when we were on top. To the girls immense credit they continued to dominate despite all 5 subs being rotated on and off at various times through the match. Only being one goal up is always a bit edgy for the coaches but even though WB improved in the second half, they could not find a way past the defence and Pip had a very quiet morning in goal. The second goal finally came for the visitors when Eve instinctively poked a toe at the ball from Nic's excellent corner and saw the keeper only able to watch as it looped over her into the top corner at the back post. With around ten minutes remaining Lauren showed some excellent skill down the right wing to leave the defender far behind, and her great cross was only partially cleared to Izzy who thumped it home. F/T WB 0 - 3 BTFC.
This was a really great team performance. Everyone deserves great credit and there were many contenders for Player of the Match. Honourable mentions to Izzy of course for her two goals and hard-but-tricky running with the ball, and to Anna B for bossing the back line so well (plus her trademark charges upfield with the ball!). However, for completely marking the opposition's main playmaker out of the game and still being a creative force herself, the BTFC PotM was Lauren. When all of the opposition coaches want to shake you by the hand and congratulate you on how well you played, you know you've done something right.
