End to end game brings first defeat of the season
Wettest match ever!
This game will chiefly be remembered for the weather, which is best described as torrential. It was also rather chilly. If we had this amount of rain on a December - February Butt Field, it would have been called off as unplayable, but due to the long hot summer baking the ground, the pitch condition was great in the rain. Lowdham are a team we have traditionally struggled with so it was interesting to see how close we would get to them.
After drying out (which only took a day or two) and defrosting my brain, this is how I recalled the game:
Lowdham started on the front foot, passing nicely but largely in front of us. Bingham defended stoutly.
We took the lead when Mia toe-poked a shot goalward from 10 yards out that went past about 12 players in super-slo-mo before coming to rest just inside the far post against the side netting.
Lowdham equalised with an equally fortunate one when a corner that was too high for Pip to reach drifted in over her.
We re-took the lead when Anna G latched on to a great through ball and struck a great shot across the keeper into the corner of the net.
Lowdham re-equalised when Pip was unable to hang on to a shot and the ball was nicked off her and banged in. We queried whether it was kicked out of her hands as it looked like that from the halfway line, the ref said no. C'est la vie. Half time: BTFC 2 - 2 Lowdham.
In the second half we started brightly and almost took the lead again, before what appeared to be collective hypothermia and a bit of ball watching at the back saw us have a mad 10 minutes and let 3 goals in. With 20 minutes still to play and 2 - 5 down we didn't want this to become a real thrashing so urged the girls not to give in.
Bingham pulled themselves together and started to knock it around. Katy got down the right wing and fired in a great low cross that the retreating defender could only turn into her own goal. 3 - 5.
Izzy went on a typical run into the box and shot powerfully home. 4 - 5 and still 10 mins to go. Slight air of nervousness among the visitors, some genuine excitement among the home support and players.
Our girls pressed hard for an equaliser but couldn't quite force one. With time up and everyone more than ready to head for a warm towel, we didn't clear a corner far enough and a strong shot had too much on it for Pip and put a bit of extra shine on the scoreline for Lowdham. Full time BTFC 4 - 6 Lowdham.
So a first defeat of the season in our sixth game. It's been a great start and although things have closed up we're still second in the league table. Lowdham are a good team and on balance of play fully deserved to win this one. That our girls kept going and pushed them very close was great to see.
All of the players on both teams deserve great credit for playing in those conditions and being freezing and wet during time on the subs bench. BTFC Player of the Match was Katy. Moved out of centre mid to the wing for this one, she created plenty going forward and tackled back all game too.
