Bingham Fight On
AFC Vernon (Colts) 7 - 2 Bingham Town Youth FC
Tom 22, 24
Ollie, Olivia, Ewen, Tom, Ben, Robbie
A Vernon kick off saw the game start with pace and an early goal left Bingham trailing. A re-grouped defence saw Bingham take on the Colts with Olivia making a strong tackle allowing Tom to clear the ball up field, chased by Olivia who ran the ball into the Vernon half. The next wave of attack from Vernon required some strong saves from Ben, diving at full stretch. A handball decision, left Ben facing a penalty, his “towering” presence causing Vernon to put it wide. The 14th minute saw Tom shoot just a fraction wide with another shot from Ollie just moments later. Ben was busy making save after save in the first half a denying the Colts most of their chances.
The second half started with a lovely drag back from Ewen, showing the opposition his football skills. Robbie took up a strong defensive position, to force Vernon back into their own half. The push forward gave Tom the space to smash the ball into the back of the net. Vernon countered with two quick goals but then it was back to Bingham; and with shots coming thick and fast it was only a matter of time before the next goal came, with Tom on the score sheet with his second. The 25th minute saw a great block from Robbie setting Ben up for a charge up field, but once again Bingham were forced back through the might of their rivals. A strong attack from Ewen left Bingham with a corner, which Tom sailed right into the middle of the box. Robbie took a great free kick, but Bingham could not make it count. An amazing performance by Ollie supported by a strong defence kept the score to 2-2 in the second half, with a huge tackle by Ben in the 38th minute.
The result did not reflect the individual skill and determination showed by Bingham over a long 40 minutes, but Bingham showed their true sportsmanship by being first to congratulate their rivals. The game gave character building performances against a vastly more experienced and well drilled team, including Forest Academy players.
