Season finally underway
After our first league game last week had to be cancelled we finally got the season underway at home versus Dunkirk. Our opposition had tried to enter a side in the league for the last couple of seasons but struggled for numbers. This time they have managed it and it is great to see a new set of girls giving it a go. It’s a steep learning curve to come in at this age group as their early results have shown, but on the evidence of this game they will be ok once they get used to playing matches and how different that is from training sessions.
Bingham dominated the match from beginning to end. This was in part down to the inexperience of the visitors, but also the great enthusiasm of our players who were desperate to get going again. As we are playing the first half of the season in the 9v9 format we had a large squad of 14 players to get involved, including Bella, Diesel and Emily making their league debuts. Anna G opened the scoring after 3 minutes, carrying on where she left off last season as our golden boot winner. Soon after that Mia got a second, before Anna scored her second and the team’s 3rd. At this point we changed the attackers, bringing on Elisabeth and Nicola who both showed some good power in their challenges and shooting, and got a goal apiece before half time. The first half also saw good link up play from Lauren and Katy in midfield, alongside Emily in her first match. Further changes saw Diesel make her first appearance in midfield, and Bella, Anna B, Lily and Evie at the back dealing comfortably with anything that came their way. In goal Pip had little to do but her vocal support and marshalling of the defence was great. Half-time: BTFC 5 – 0 Dunkirk.
In the second half we made as many changes as we could to get all the girls a decent amount of game time and also to prevent the scoreline from getting out of hand. Even so, Bingham added further goals from Drew (her first ever), Lauren, Anna G completing her hat-trick and Diesel also getting her first goal. Mia went extremely close with a header just over the bar after some great work down the right from Lauren which she followed up with a perfect cross. Clearly the pre-match chatter about headed goals possibly being worth some Costa vouchers had got into Mia’s mind!
The final score was BTFC 9 – 0 Dunkirk. Everyone played well for Bingham and there were several candidates for player of the match. Honourable mentions go to all the goalscorers, plus our 3 debutants, and also to the Dunkirk goalie who had a difficult game, pulled off some brave saves and kept going til the end. BTFC PotM was Drew who put in her usual all-action tackling display, but this time playing in centre midfield and showed much greater positional awareness and better passing than previously. A great performance which she capped off with a fine goal.
