A creditable draw
This was a chance to have another go at the team that denied us the 9-a-side league title before Christmas. To be fair we've never got that close to them over the years but it was an opportunity nonetheless. I wasn't at this one due to commitments elsewhere, so the following report is from Anna G's mum;
"There was a lot of early pressure from a well organised Lowdham. They scored their goal midway through the first half after lots of good passing and big kicks up the right side of the pitch, making it hard for Mia who was in goal. There was the usual tireless defending from Anna B, Bella and Evie but we weren't getting much respite. Then the tide turned, we did some good passing of our own and started to build pressure. Anna G played in midfield in the absence of Katy and Lauren and was starting to get the ball up to Izzy and Eve with some good bits of skill. Emily too was getting a fair bit of the ball and pressuring Lowdham into making mistakes. There was a bit of a hold up (and some uncertainty about what to do from the ref) whilst a Lowdham defender changed out of dangerous boots on the pitch and everyone caught their breath.
A few corners kept the pressure up. The equalising goal came before half time with Anna G in the centre passing wide left and the pressure resulted in a throw in. Emily threw to Eve who laid off to Emily again, a pass back to Eve who angled it across goal and in the far bottom corner for her third goal of the season.
In the second half it was quite tight and very tense. Drew had a fantastic spell in defence as did Elisabeth, and Izzy showed lots of skill throughout with some good runs on the right wing and through the centre. Rioja and Diesel did well and Evie went in goal for the second half and made some brave saves.
Nicola showed her sprinting ability again, and she and Molly made some good attacking moves. Lowdham kept the pressure up but neither side could get a winner and a draw against a good side who defeated us last time out seemed a fair result. Anna G was named player of the match, but honourable mention to both the stand in goalies who kept us in it and to Drew and Izzy who each had a great game. Honourable mention to manager Rick. He was like Miss Rabbit from Peppa Pig ... simultaneously and energetically the linesman/ supporter/ coach and commentator" - Clare G.
After asking the parents for a match report I also received the following quotes;
"I thought all the girls did really well" - Ruth C
"Really really well" - Helen K
So that's the Pulitzer Prize sewn up for this year. Thanks ladies for your efforts!
