Girls come through a battling first half to dominate latter stages

This was our first visit to Hykeham to play the Tigers and we sincerely hope that it won't be our last. They have had a difficult first season in the league and by all accounts the girls set up there is not as well supported by the club as we are at BTFC. It would be a real shame to lose yet another team in our age group so hopefully they can regroup and recruit a couple more players over the summer, and we will see them again next season.

It was a chilly morning but the pitch was flat and in mostly excellent condition. One thing Hykeham definitely have in common with Bingham is inconsiderate dog owners who feel that a sporting facility for children is an appropriate place for our canine friends to use as a toilet, and that no cleaning up is required. Disgusting and selfish in the extreme. After the clean up, we warmed up our large squad and sorted out who was playing where and who was starting on the bench, then the game got underway with Rick filling in admirably for the AWOL referee.

Bingham played into the cold wind in the first half. It was competitive in the packed midfield area, and when our girls moved the ball as well as they can they looked capable of cutting through the Hykeham defence. However, a combination of wayward shooting and poor first touches in the box combined with some good goalkeeping and last ditch defending meant that we failed to score in the first half, though Lauren and Anna G both hit the bar and Emily had a strong shot from close range well saved. In our goal Pip didn't have too much to do, and aside from a couple of scrambles to clear the ball after corners there were few threats on the Bingham goal. Half Time: Hykeham Tigers 0 - 0 BTFC.

During the break the Bingham players were given some advice which they heeded, and in the second half they put in a dominant display. Eve opened the scoring after she and Emily both chased in a through ball that the 'keeper came to collect but didn't hold on to. Emily nicked it away from the prone goalie and Eve put it in the back of the net. A few minutes later Lauren and Izzy were re-introduced to play after a spell on the bench. Immediately Izzy picked up the ball in midfield and played a lovely pass forward to put Lauren away. She took the ball around the goalkeeper and slotted home for the second goal. In a similar move Lauren this time took the shot early across the 'keeper for the third. Sitting on a hat-trick she hit the post and went close a couple more times before Izzy decided to take matters into her own hands with a surging run forward from midfield followed by a hard and low shot to the bottom corner. That was the end of the scoring, though in truth Bingham could have scored a few more, especially with some exciting runs down the wing from both Annas and Nic creating some great chances, and Diesel in her best game for us so far getting through a couple of times. Hykeham did create two or three good counter attacks but Pip did well each time to narrow the angle and shut down the opportunity. Their best chance came from a poor clearance that was returned with some force but span just wide of Pip's goal. In the end the scoreline reflected the dominance of the visitors without things getting out of hand. Hykeham used different goalies in each half and both of them played very well and kept the score respectable. Full time: Hykeham 0 - 4 BTFC.

This may have been our last game of the season, although we are trying to get one or two more on to make up for those lost to the rain/snow/frost. All the Bingham players did well, and it is particularly encouraging to see those still in their first season settling comfortably into match football. We look forward to training hard , playing some tournaments before the summer holidays, and then seeing them all really push on again when things resume in the autumn. BTFC Player of the Match was shared between Lauren and Izzy, who seem to be forming a promising goalscoring combination.
