Depleted squad shows fighting spirit
It's never easy getting matches on during the school holidays as everyone (except the coaches) seems to be jetting off somewhere exotic. It weren't like this when I was a lad. Despite building up our squad to a very healthy eighteen in number, thanks to holidays and visits to see the rellies dahn South / oop North we only had eleven players for this away game with Market Warsop. Their usual ground was unavailable so we had our first trip to their standby venue at the home of Robin Hood Colts FC in Edwinstowe. The pitch itself was on a bit of a slope and would appear to support a thriving rabbit population on non-match days, but as ever it was the same for both teams and we have played on much worse this season!
Among our absentees were our goalkeeper Pip and top scorer Anna G. We were also without experienced defenders in Evie and Lily, other regular strikers Nic and Eve, and our midfield dynamo and last seasons double award winning Player of the Season, Katy.
Mia went in goal, meaning our outfield ten included five girls in their first season of competitive football. Warsop were also missing a few squad members and only had one sub, so at least we knew they would be getting tired at a similar rate to us as the match progressed.
Bingham started off playing up the hill and the girls were on it right from the start. Excellent defending from the front by Emily and Diesel in attack put the home defence under pressure whenever they had the ball. Each team had dominant spells but the better chances fell to BTFC, who finally took the lead after MW failed to clear a corner and Molly's left foot effort found its way through a crowd of players into the bottom corner of the net. Warsop thought they had equalised close to half time but the ball had only partially crossed the line before it was cleared.
H/T: Market Warsop 0 - 1 Bingham Town.
Facing down the slope in the second half the Bingham girls carried on where they had left off, working really hard to stop the opposition from playing and now with our central midfielders Lauren and Izzy making runs into the box they were causing real problems for the home defence. We looked a little vulnerable to the counter attack as Warsop had a very quick player up front who was adept at making runs 'off the shoulder' of our last defender, but with the speed of Anna B and Elisabeth in central defence, and Mia being very quick to come off her line and sweep, the girls dealt with everything that came their way. Inside the last ten minutes Bingham finally put the game out of reach. A great dribbling run down the right by Lauren saw her pull the ball back across the box. Izzy had timed her run perfectly and after her initial shot came back off the inside of the post she was alert enough to stick the rebound into the back of the net. She had gone close with a couple of runs and shots earlier on and so the goal was well deserved. F/T: Market Warsop 0 - 2 Bingham Town.
So many of our newer players needing to experience a full game was exactly the reason we tried hard to get the game on, despite it being in the school holidays. Our matches with Market Warsop over the last couple of seasons have all been close affairs regardless of the final score and this was no exception. Bingham probably deserved the win by creating slightly better chances on the day but we know that with the teams being so well matched we will have to work hard to get anything against them. They have beaten some good sides this season making this a very positive performance for us.
Honourable mentions this week go to: All the players. Stand in 'keeper Mia was excellent, showing safe hands and bravery on the floor. Bella, Anna B, Elisabeth and Rioja had good games at the back (we need to work on that alignment though girls!). Drew and Molly playing left and right wide midfield worked very hard at closing down the opposition and backing up the forwards in defending from the front. Lauren and Izzy both looked classy on the ball in central midfield. Emily and Diesel also worked extremely hard for the team in attack, despite not getting many clear chances at goal themselves. Molly and Izzy both scored their debut goals for Bingham.
BTFC Player of the Match was Izzy for a solid display of tackling, passing, running with the ball and capping it off with a fine goal.
