For one week only the match report returns. Sometimes in football you don't get what you deserve and this was one of those games. For all the seasons our team has been in existence, Lowdham have had a stronger side than us. The question was whether we could reduce and eventually close that gap to them and other more established teams. A task that was made more difficult by some canny recruitment by the opposition last summer. However, we decided to give it a good go in our final game whilst also trying out a few players in new positions.
Long story short: in the first half they gave us a torrid time down our left side and Bella had to work very hard to cope with it. Eventually we were undone by a ball over the top of our high defensive line, and a good finish. A second was added with a strong header from a corner. However we were unable to take advantage of numerous very good situations ourselves in attack when the final pass was just too heavy. Several scoring chances came and went, Lauren coming closest to a cross that she couldn't quite reach as the open goal gaped. She and Izzy also had decent shots saved and were just wide with a couple more. In the second half Lauren hit the bar twice as we pressed to get a goal back. Lowdham got their third with a long range shot, Pip back-pedalling couldn't get enough on it to tip it over. When we're talking about 15yr old girls in a full size goal, these things will happen. To compound our misfortune on the day our top scorer Izzy was carried off after a nasty bang sustained to her knee. Get well soon Izzy!
Overall while they may have conceded more the girls really deserved to score some goals in this game. As we had an experimental midfield and forward line, along with some others who have not had much football of late, this was very encouraging. We will continue to train and work on things up to the summer holidays, taking in a couple of tournaments along the way, then a good number of the girls will get to experience some overseas football when we take a mixed age side to our twin town of Wallenfells in Germany and play a couple of matches.
Thank you to all the mums, dads, carers, grandparents, siblings, friends (and dogs!) etc who have come to watch us this season, the support has been excellent as always. We hope to see you all on 8th June for the Awards Day at BTFC.
